What it is

Shadow AI is the use of chat assistants, browser extensions or AI features in apps outside the company's control, often on private accounts. It usually starts with good intentions: people want to work faster.

Example

Employees paste contracts, proposals and spreadsheets into AI chats on their private accounts, without the IT team knowing.

What can go wrong

Company data outside company control, no data processing agreement, and no record of what left.

How to secure it

Don't just ban it: offer a sanctioned tool that is just as convenient, set a clear policy, and train people (see AI literacy).
