What it is

With function calling, the model returns a structured request to run a specific tool with specific parameters. The application runs the tool and passes the result back. This is how assistants check stock, book meetings or run code.

Example

"How many orders are late this week?" — the model calls a reporting function and answers with the real number.

What can go wrong

A manipulated model can call tools it shouldn't, with parameters chosen by an attacker.

How to secure it

Give each tool the narrowest permissions, validate every parameter, and require confirmation for actions that change data or spend money.
