Transparency duties (Art. 50)

People should know when they talk to an AI, or look at content an AI has generated.

EU rules path · 3 of 4

What it is

Article 50 of the EU AI Act requires, among other things, that people are told when they interact with an AI system such as a chatbot. Providers of generative AI must mark synthetic images, audio, video and text in a machine-readable way (with an exception for simple editing help), and companies that publish deepfakes must disclose them.

Example

A website chat says up front that it is an AI assistant — like the one on this site.

What can go wrong

Users mistaking an AI for a person, or AI-generated content passed off as authentic.

How to secure it

Label AI assistants at the point of contact, mark generated media, and keep a record of how you do it.

EU rules

Applies since 2 August 2026. Generative AI systems already on the market before then have until 2 December 2026 to add machine-readable marking.
